It is a good tradition to organize social events that serve as hubs for creating and extending new contacts in research. Moreover, we would like to entertain you after the scientific sessions and make your stay in the Czech Republic more pleasant and inspiring as well. Networking is important for anyone’s research. There will be plenty of possibilities during events such as icebreaker, poster sessions with beer tasting, visit of Mendel museum with wine tasting and gala dinner.
- Tuesday 10th September 2019 – Wine tasting in Mendel’s museum
- Thursday 12th September 2019 – Gala dinner in Fait gallery
Gala dinner venue – vaňkovka
The Vaňkovka, a cultural monument of neo-gothic industrial architecture, is situated on the edge of the historical city centre between the rail and bus stations. It was in this space that in 1865 Friedrich Wannieck built his engineering works and foundry; at the end of the 19th century they controlled the entire world market for some of the products manufactured here and they later became one of the pillars of the První brněnská strojírna (First Brno Engineering Works).
Some important technical fields of expertise, especially the invention of diffusers and cutting machines for the sugar industry, will forever be associated with the Vaňkovka. During the second half of the 19th century, Wannieck´s factory grew successfully and at the end of the 19th century it merged with the První brněnská strojírna.
The company prospered until the onset of the Second World War, but as early as the 1920s the Vaňkovka was considered to be old-fashioned and unsuitable for economic production, with poor lighting and narrow working conditions. Machinery and manufacturing were gradually moved elsewhere and in March 1988 the final historical smelting took place.
The neglected industrial premises of considerable historical and architectural value were not given a new lease of life until almost twenty years later. In March 2005 the new Galerie Vaňkovka shopping and social centre was opened, as were the offices of a new cultural centre, and the Vaňkovka Foundry centre for Brno and South Moravian Region. In March 2006 the Wannieck Gallery – a modern art gallery – was opened in the reconstructed engineering works. Nowadays Fait Gallery is located there.
